Principle / Concept
of
Gum Surgery:
The principle of most gum surgeries is to create a zone of “thick”, leathery type material and gain as much attachment (as possible) to the area of concern. There are various types and techniques of periodontal surgeries that can be utilized. It is very difficult to predict “how” someone will react to surgery (since we are all different and their may be multiple factors involved).
The concept(s), which apply, are the same as for any surgery. The best analogy is to think about a “wound” which is open. If you get a deep cut, you would wash / disinfect the area and then either stitch it closed and / or place a Band-Aid over the area. Over time, a scab is formed and once the scab has “sloughed off” we usually will have some sort of scar tissue remaining.
This scar tissue is what we are interested in, since it is what creates a “seal” or “better attachment” around the teeth, and therefore prevents further deterioration of the tissues involved.
